About  Garuda Temple

The Garuda Temple in Koladevi is the only temple in the world dedicated solely to Sri Garuda Deva, the divine vahana of Lord Vishnu.

It stands as a sacred symbol of protection, strength, and devotion.

📍Location

Nestled in the quiet village of Koladevi, Mulbagal Taluk, Kolar District, Karnataka, this sacred Garuda temple stands as a divine centre of devotion.

Nearby lies the historic Kurudumale Ganesha Temple in Mulbagal Taluk, and the region is rich with ancient shrines.

The origin of this temple traces back to

the Treta Yuga.

When Ravana abducted Sita Devi in his Pushpaka Vimana, Jatayu, the divine bird and devotee of Lord Vishnu, tried to rescue her.

In the fierce battle, Ravana severed Jatayu’s wings — and it is believed that where the wings fell is the sacred ground where Garuda Devalaya now stands.

In Kannada, “Kolu” means to strike or kill, and thus the place came to be known as Koladevi.

As Jatayu fell, he uttered “Rama, Rama, Rama,” invoking the Lord’s name — and Lord Hanuman himself came rushing to this site.

Hence, a unique Anjaneya Swamy idol is also enshrined here, holding a Brahmastra and showing his teeth – a rare sight in any temple.

Temple History

The Prathishta of this temple was performed by Sri Ramanujacharya in the 11th century.

This makes the temple over 1100 years old, preserving a legacy of deep Vaishnavite devotion and ancient architectural grace.

🐍 Divine Power and Sarpa Dosha Nivarana

The Murti of Lord Garuda Deva here is adorned with eight serpents (Ashta Naagas) on His body, representing Kaala Sarpa Dosha, Hridaya Dosha, Rahu-Ketu Dosha, and more.

Worshipping here is believed to relieve all Sarpa Doshas completely — something that other temples address only partially.

Hence, devotees visit from far and wide seeking Lord Garuda’s blessings for peace, prosperity, and protection.

 Unique Deity Arrangement

In the Garbhagudi, Sri Garuda Deva is seated at the center, with Lord Narayana to His right and Goddess Lakshmi to His left.

This sacred arrangement fulfills Lord Narayana’s promise that those who worship Garuda here shall also receive the blessings of Lakshmi-Narayana, ensuring both spiritual upliftment and material abundance.
